Sam The Cooking Guy Website

Sam’s 3.6 million YouTube subscribers didn’t want to be limited by categories or keywords. I designed and developed his new website in Webflow so Sam can easily add new recipes with high res photos and videos. Plus, visitors can now quickly search and find anything in his 1800+ recipe catalog.

Watch one of Sam’s videos, and you’ll see he has a big, bold personality. He’s unapologetically Sam. His new site needed to show that boldness. At the same time, it needed to be a pragmatic tool that showcases his recipes and entices users to explore.

Back in the early 2000s, when Flash ruled the web, I designed and built Sam’s very first website, along with a couple of more versions after that. But as things go sometimes, he moved over to Squarespace somewhere along the way. Decades went by (literally), then boom! Out of the blue, I get a text with one of those “maybe we should get the band back together” messages.

Sam’s old site was limited. The search function wasn’t working how you’d expect a search to work. It was limited to keywords that had to be pre-filled when a recipe was added. Even if the recipe was for pizza, it wouldn’t come up if “pizza” wasn’t in the keyword list. But now, if that word is mentioned somewhere in the title, intro text, ingredients list, or directions, it will appear in a search.

Webflow’s search gave me powerful tools to build that internal search function and customize the results screens. As a designer, this kind of functionality was beyond my reach for a long time. I would have to bring in a team of developers that added tens of thousands of dollars in extra expense. But thanks to Webflow, I was able to handle everything myself, saving Sam the extra expenses and saving me the hassle of managing another team.

Speaking of teams... Sam’s team is small but highly efficient. Just a handful of people are dedicated to helping him crank out multiple YouTube videos every week. Everyone is already busy enough, so Sam needed to be able to update the website himself or delegate that responsibility when he was traveling. Again, Webflow made this possible.

Here, you can see the simple editor interface.

Aside from the oddballs who may be willing to have their laptop on the counter while they cook... or those who are okay with trying to wake their tablet screen when they have raw chicken juice on their hands... people want to print recipes to use while they cook. Instead of writing custom code to handle print styles, I used PrintFriendly's Print Button to give visitors that ability.
